Storytelling through Sound….



Storytelling is the art of making connections between characters, places, ideas, and experiences. The way the sound could eventually be a part of film narrative will be more determined by the use of time, space, and perception in the story.  Randy Thom believes that the most of the great sound sequences in films are “POV” (Point Of View) sequences. What we as an audience experience during these sequences are being filtered through the consciousness (point of view) of one, or more, of the characters in that particular scene. It gives lots of information about who they are and what they are feeling (Thom 1999). He strongly believe that the role of sound in any film should be more as a collaborator with other art forms in the film production and different arts should influence each other to get better results. He thinks in order  to get an intelligent and efficient soundtrack for a film one should start think about sound right from the scripting stage of a film. He stress on the need for a sound designer to be involved in a film project right from the pre-production stage to get better results in final soundtrack. He has suggested three simple tips to help to bring out the power of sound in the film narrative.

The three simple tips to unleash the power of sound in the film production medium are 9

1. If someone in the scene isn’t listening to what’s going on, then the audience isn’t going to be listening either.

2. The frame needs to contain some mystery, something which is not obvious. when we think we are getting enough information with our eyes we tend not to fully use our ears.

3. Storytelling is about making connections between characters, places, ideas, and experiences.

Bob Zemeckis is one of those directors who realises that only when each craft (in a film production) influences every other craft does the movie begin to take on a life of it’s own.  Randy Thom has been an integral part of Robert Zemeckis’s creative team.
